The concept of Controlled Atmosphere or Modified Atmosphere Packaging ( CAP or MAP ) is fast emerging as the leading packaging option for
preservation of fresh and processed foods which are required to be stored over longer periods of time and under diverse storrage temperatures and conditions. Via CAP system, the food product is packaged in a High Barrier Film or laminate, following which the atmosphere inside the pack is controlled via various gas flushing and vaccumising options. After the pack is sealed or vaccum packed, the High Barrier film prevents furthur transmission of gasses in or out of the pack, thus extending the shelf life and ensuring that the product reaches the customer in a fresher condition.
CAP films and pouches are based on Polyamid (Nylon) and EVOH High Barrier polymers, the contents of which are adjusted to meet the shelf life requirements of individual products. They are an ideal cost effective replacement to the expensive tin packing and aluminium foil based laminates , plus they offer the added advantage that the packed product can be visually inspected by the consumer prior to purchase.
