Traditionally Oxygen sensitive products were packaged in tins or Aluminium Foil based materials which were energy consuming , expensive and also not environmentally friendly. Over the years , lower cost alternatives have been developed by High Barrier co-extruded film technology , whereby expensive barriers are substituted with cheaper plastic alternatives, which provide the desired shelf life and are also fully recyclable after use. Being lighter, they consume lesser energy , are easier to dispose and above all , are considerably cheaper.
The vaccum packaging concept involves placing the product in a vaccum bag , removing the air from inside via suction and once the contents are fully vaccumised, sealing the bag , thus ensuring that the product is no longer in contact with the atmospheric gases , which would otherwise limit the shelf life of the product. There are various options , such as vaccum bags , vaccum films for high speed horizontal vaccum packing lines , vaccum skin packing films for the marine industry and vaccum boil bags for the processed meat industry. Several options are possible and can be designed to conform to the product packing requirements. vaccum bags generally incorporate Polyamid & EVOH barrier materials. These may be furthur laminated to Ployester, BOPP and Aluminium Foils to furthur enhance the shelf life properties. The bags may be coloured or UV stabilised to meet outdoor storrage requirements. Although vaccum packing is a well developed concept for packing Dairy and Meat products , it is also finding increasing applications for packaging of Engineering Products which require long term rust prevention properties.
